About the piece

This lighthearted intermediate level piano work is about wiggling. Slippery harmonies give way to a writhing accompaniment and jaunty melody. It was commissioned by composer/pianist Joanne Cho to celebrate the first birthday of her son Elaeth; the best review it received was that kids at a children’s concert spontaneously got up to dance during the performance.

Alba is loosely based on the most famous troubadour abla, or dawn song, Reis Glorios, by Giraut de Bornelh (c.1140 – 1200). The poem, like most albas, reflects on the closing of a tryst at the end of the night as dawn approaches.
