About the piece

1. Infatuation
2. Lullaby
3. Declaration/Dream

Love Songs for Solo Bassoon illustrates various aspects of love, and incorporates the extraordinary variety of colors available to the bassoonist. The first movement, “Infatuation”, obsessively returns to the same repeated notes. During the middle movement, “Lullaby”, the bassoonist simultaneously plays both the cantabile melody and the gently rocking accompaniment. The closing movement, “Declaration / Dream”, begins with an authoritative statement and then wanders through a set of kaleidoscopic lyrical variants.

Alba is loosely based on the most famous troubadour abla, or dawn song, Reis Glorios, by Giraut de Bornelh (c.1140 – 1200). The poem, like most albas, reflects on the closing of a tryst at the end of the night as dawn approaches.
